Her home is on an island called Cairnholm, located in Wales. Jake's aunt gives him a book from Abe from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which contains a postcard from Miss Peregrine welcoming him to return. He would tell Jake about a group home for children run by Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), a mysterious Englishwoman who, along with the other children there, have strange abilities that she kept living with her. We see a flashback of Jake as a child with Abe telling him fantastical stories about encountering monsters and other oddities. He knows it was no accident, despite the coroner stating that Abe had a heart attack. Golan (Allison Janney) to talk about how he's felt since his grandfather's passing. Later on, Jake visits his psychologist Dr. She starts shooting, but she sees nothing. Shelley emerges with her gun, and Jake alerts her to the creature behind her. Abe dies, and a monstrous creature starts walking toward Jake. He is conscious long enough to warn Jake of something awful. Abe is lying on the ground with his eyes missing. Outside in the woods, Jake finds Abe's flashlight with blood on it. Jake enters Abe's house to find it ransacked. Jackson) standing in the road menacingly. For me, I saw the very strange photo on the cover and said to myself, “This is a book that I need to read.” I am very glad that I did.Florida teen Jake Portman (Asa Butterfield) feels he lives a mundane life. Teens and adults looking for an original read might want to try this one. The book is illustrated with photographs of some of Miss Peregrine’s Home’s peculiar residents adding to the book’s mildly creepy tone. There are elements of fantasy, action, suspense and plenty of comic relief. This is a dark, quirky, and yes, peculiar novel. Everything he thought he knew about himself, his family and the world he lives in is called into question as he attempts to unravel the secrets of Abe’s past and find out what happened to him. Jacob travels to Cairnholm Island and discovers that what’s real and what’s fake isn’t as easy to determine as he thought. When Abe is murdered, Jacob is grief-stricken and the strange circumstances behind his death only make the devastating situation worse. As much as he enjoys the stories, only a little kid would actually believe in things like that. They had to have been faked, right? Pictures of a little girl who can levitate or of a boy covered with bees can’t be real. As a young child, Jacob believed every wild tale.īut Jacob is a teenager now and the rational adult in him is doubting the veracity of his grandpa’s stories and the authenticity of these sepia-toned images. Abe even has photos of his fellow residents at Miss Peregrine’s Home to prove that the stories are all true. Jacob has grown up hearing stories about children with peculiar abilities who lived in this home. Jacob Portman’s grandfather, Abe, was sent to a children’s home during World War II to escape Nazi persecution in Poland. ![]()
